South Korea

Updated: Apr 23, 2019

This adventure started with an ogre and ended with a hurricane.

Curiosity in Colour path:

LONDON 🛫⇨ SEOUL 🚄⇨ JEONJU 🚌⇨ GYEONGJU 🚌⇨ BUSAN 🚌⇨ JINJU 🛫⇨ JEJU 🛫⇨ SEOUL 🛫⇨ LONDON

We chose to visit South Korea as it’s a country that’s rich in culture and uniquely has a little bit of everything – city life, historic villages as well as beautiful beaches. We were looking forward to experiencing a vibrant fast-paced city, getting transported back in time whilst visiting a traditional South Korean village and soaking in those glorious rays on some hidden gem beaches 🌞👓

South Korea delivered these amazing experiences:

(L – R: Busan, Cityscape; Gyeongju, Donggung Palace and Jeju Island, Hyeopjae beach)

However, it didn’t start very well. Most of the South Koreans we encountered were extremely friendly and patient with us. We were just extremely unlucky to have booked to stay in accommodation that should have been unlisted. Thankfully, it’s currently unbookable and we hope it stays that way #GetRidOfTheMyeongdongOgre. The full rant can be viewed here.

Curiosity in Colour highlights:

One-word HANBOK – incredibly romantic, resplendently unique and a great way to feel famous. We weren’t special until we tried on our hanbok – with them on we got treated like Bey & Jay, Harry & Meghan (the second most famous interracial couple) and Obama & Michelle.

Food – South Koreans like their food. The traditional dish bibimbap, which we had in the place it was created was… okay 😬. We both were not overly keen on it as well as some other dishes (we sucked snails). However, we did find some amazing dishes including Bao Buns (🔟/🔟), expertly fried Chicken Wings & KOREAN BBQ (in Jeju they have black pigs – power to the Suidae ✊🏾).

Korean Spa – An experience like no other. A must if you’re visiting South Korea. We hadn't initially planned to go to the spa however, we were desperate for indoor activities following the unexpected arrival of the aforementioned hurricane. It turned out to be just as fun as it was relaxing 💆🏾‍♂️🧖🏾‍♂️ 💆 🧖

Jinju Namgang Yudeung Festival – We didn’t know what to expect as the pictures didn’t look great. It’s one of South Korea's biggest yearly events with 2.8 million annual attendees. We now know why. It’s stunning and pictures don’t do it justice. In our excitement, we nearly ended up on Korean TV but thankfully the public relations delegate couldn’t fit us into his busy schedule.
