Jam or cream first?

Updated: Jul 23, 2019

Being curious can sometimes be tasty.

As curious individuals, we’re always up for finding answers to any and every question! This includes who in central London delivers the best scone eating experience. A scone is a small unsweetened (or lightly sweetened) cake made from flour, butter and milk. Some people like their scones with some fruit (usually sultanas or cherries).

Our grandmothers have passed down varying recipes, however, this adventure isn’t about baking – it’s about eating! We drew up a list of three places that had this tasty British teatime treat on their menu:

(L-R: Bea’s of Bloomsbury, Gail’s Bakery and Yumchaa Tea)

Curiosity in Colour debriefing:

Bea’s of Bloomsbury – lovely surroundings and great service. The scone was unique and not like the scones we’re familiar with. We have awarded them bonus points for the scone coming out lovely and warm. Unfortunately, the cream and jam were sparse. We also weren’t impressed with the jam. A scone this good deserves a proper flavorsome jam. Not sure where their jam is from but there are better jams available 6/10

Gail’s Bakery – now this is what you call JAM! Sweet, juicy and fruity. The scone was cold, which was unfortunate, and we weren’t asked if we would like it warmed up. However, the plentiful cream and delicious jam made up for the cold scone. This scone was more like the scones we know 7\10

Yumchaa Tea – BUSY! A lot was going on in that shop. They also ran out of plain scones (I think that means they’re good). We had the sultana scone to go because there were no seats! You get given lovely tubs of cream and jam. We warmed up the scone (did you hear that Gail’s Bakery) and enjoyed it in the comfort of our home. It was okay 5/10

So what will it be, jam or cream first?
