Food tastes better on holiday… Food tastes surreal in Italy

Curiosity in Colour path:

LONDON 🛫⇨ VENICE 🛫⇨ CATANIA 🚗⇨ NOTO 🚗⇨ CATANIA 🛫⇨ ROME 🛫⇨ LONDON

To us, a holiday is more than a word it gives us the opportunity to have a total change of scenery and mindset. While we recognised that the ideal vacation varies from person to person, however, we feel a holiday should always provide the absence of stress and regeneration of the spirit. Italy provided this to us and we didn’t want it to stop. The holiday started in Venice, which is known for its narrow streets that open onto magnificent bridges that provide views, which make you remember why it’s important to love. The power these bridges possess is so great that one of us wished we had brought a padlock to lock in our love 💖🔐.

After an afternoon trip to Murano island to see the famous glass blowing, we could of went home there and then happy! However, Italy had more in store for us. Our next stop was Catania, which is the second largest city of Sicily after Palermo. Catania is very close to some truly amazing hidden gems including Noto and the Cavagrande Nature Reserve. These were not easy to find but all good things come to those that wait 😉. However, if you don’t have a licence and/or patience the ancient Taormina amphitheatre is much easier to find and has a spectacular view of Mount Etna.

Our penultimate stop was Rome and the Vatican City, which we viewed at night:

The next morning, we finished this holiday with visits to the Trevi Fountain, Pantheon, Roman Forum, Colosseum, Arch of Constantine and Magistral Villa (home of the not so hidden gem, keyhole – the view is worth the queue). We racked up more than 32,000 steps and covered almost 21km visiting these landmarks so make sure you have you walking shoes on 👟👣

Curiosity in Colour highlights:

FOOD – every dish we tried in Italy was mouth-watering, delicate and fresh. For lunch, in Catania, we had a bruschetta each and shared burrata and tomatoes. We looked at each other whilst chewing these sweet scrumptious red oval-shaped delights. A look that said, people, should only be able to call a tomato a tomato if it tastes this good!

Noto and the Cavagrande Nature Reserve – one is an enchanted town with stunning orange buildings and the other is a 45-minute hike with incredible views at the start and finish.

TOP TIPS:

  • Be careful on the roads leading to NOTO, they’re extremely narrow and Italians drive without fear

  • You will have to climb a fence to start the hike

  • For the hike – bring bathing clothes as well as plenty of water and food

  • Be careful on the water and rocks – one of us had an accident 🤕

The Birds in Piazza San Marco - we had just brought two tasty toasted sandwiches and were extremely pleased with our deli choice. Now, all we had to do was find the perfect spot to enjoy them. After the sandwiches, the plan was to visit Saint Mark Basilica, so we thought it made sense to eat them a few metres away from the Basilica in Piazza San Marco. One bite in and we were smugly proud of our choice. As we were about to take the second bite a huge deafening screech, SWARRRKKKK, rang in our ears. At this moment, the sandwich was just millimetres from the mouth. After giving its battle cry, a humongous bird swooped down and stole the sandwich with one swift movement 🦅🥪😥. Petrified we ran for cover hoping that this wasn't the start of Planet of the Aves and that nobody had caught that on film. Thankfully neither happened, so we went back to the deli to replace the stolen sandwich.

If you have any questions on Venice, Catania or Rome please don’t hesitate to get in touch.
